Topic #2 - Pencils

What was your concept for this site?

The "one page" websites were designed to convey the importance of the pencil in a minimalistic yet effective way. The concepts ranged from fun to a classy/elegant themes. Even in the Digital Age, the importance of a wood and graphite instrument can never be ignored.

A bold layout with large graphics would call attention to the beauty of different types of pencils (mechanical, old style) etc.	A fun layout that would appeal to the child i all of us. This website would benefit from a hand-rendered design.	A sleek/elegant layout that will feature beautiful photos interspersed within a clean design.

Which design did you choose and why?

I chose Design #3 (sleek) due to its potential of using large type within the header, and yet not seeming or heavy handed or amateurish. The beautiful photographs and chice of fonts would be an important factor in the success of this layout.

What changes did you make to your revision and why?

The blue pencils provided a more colorful backdrop to the web page as opposed to the more subdued feel of the black pencils in the first design. I also chose photographs which featured the pencils in a vertical position so as to make the overall appearance more uniform in its appearance. I also changed the "PENCIL" lettering to a lower case in order to get a more playful feel to the design. The area below the Header type also provided a nice space in which to incorporate the "type as button" letters.
